Little Saigon Tours

Little Saigon Tours is an integral part of the Southern California Leadership Network’s (SCLN) annual leadership program, conducted in partnership with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. This program involves approximately 40 mid- to senior-level executives from the nonprofit, business, and government sectors, who engage in an eight-month fellowship to explore Southern California’s assets and pressing issues. A key component of this fellowship is the Little Saigon excursion in Orange County, designed to immerse participants in the history and cultural significance of the Vietnamese community in the region.

Goals

• Provide fellows with a deeper understanding of the historical, cultural, and economic impact of the Vietnamese American community in Orange County.
• Foster appreciation and knowledge among participants that can inform their leadership and collaborative efforts across the region.
• Promote cross-cultural understanding and partnerships among SCLN fellows and community leaders.

Approach

• Conduct a driving tour through Little Saigon, stopping at various historic landmarks to provide participants with firsthand experiences of key sites.
• Host a panel discussion featuring 3-4 expert speakers on topics such as the economic impact of the Vietnamese community, leadership efforts across cultural lines, and community responses to contemporary issues.
• Facilitate interactive sessions throughout the tour and panel discussion to encourage active engagement and dialogue among participants and community leaders.

Results

• Participants consistently describe the Little Saigon Tours as one of the most valuable and inspiring experiences during the SCLN fellowship.
• Increased awareness among fellows of the Vietnamese community’s contributions to Orange County and the cultural and economic dynamics at play.
• Enhanced collaboration skills and insights among participants, enabling them to address critical issues in their professional roles more effectively.
